Southampton Masonic Hall, Hampshire

The Southampton Masonic Hall in Albion Place has been the home of Southampton Masons for the past 144 years. There were grand plans for this part of the town during its Spa period however in the late 1870’s this was in a decline and those grand plans were never achieved.

The land for the hall was purchased in June 1878, for the sum of £600 by a group of Masons and the corner stone of this historic building was laid on 24th March 1879. By November 1879, only 6 months later, the work was completed, at a total cost of £2,270. It has undergone many changes and extensions over the years to become the building we love and cherish today.

The building stands at the top of the 40 step flight down the old town walls to what was, when the building was opened, the promenade by the sea. It is from this that the building is affectionately called ‘40 Steps’.
